Investing in socially responsible communities
Corporate social responsibility

Modern "post-industrial“ business organizations increasingly generate „added value“ to their work. That added value comes from allocation of funds for projetcs aimed at producing public good and social development in the communities they operate in, from implementation of programs for staff volunteers for important social causes, attracting as employees socially excluded people, manufacturing products and services in compliance with the ecological norms and the health of the consumers etc.
This approach of the organization’s work leads to improvement of its image and to a better identification of its products, to improvement of the business organization’s links with the public organizations and the local authorities and institutions, to increase of its market share and clients, to easier attraction and retaining of employees etc.

Social responsibility of a company can have different dimensions. Still the socially responsible business is working in the following four fields:

  • A well-organized and equipped working place makes the business a successful one by creating appropriate working conditions for the employees and thus giving them a possibility to express their potential and motivation in order the business to be a successful one.

  • Market is the second field where the social responsibility can be expressed. This expression is connected with production of goods and services that are of a good quality and respond to the clients’ needs are thus satisfy their business and personal interests.

  • Environment is the third field where the socially responsible principles of work can be implemented. Carrying out of the respective business activities in a way that protects and cares for the environment and integrating these principles in the entire work is an important precondition for a successful business.

  • The fourth field of work concerning the social responsibility is the community in which the respective business operates. Investment in the employees’ working time, expertise and resources in order economic opportunities to be given and the living standard of the people in the community to be improved, as well as encouraging of good will on behalf of the population in the community where the business carries out operations, is an important part of the business’ work in achieving a social wetfare. Investments in the social and economic development of the community might be many and different - ranging from donating funds for a certain cause (corporate philanthropy) through creating of volunteer programs for its employees to implementation of long-term local development programs uniting the above mentioned initiatives.

The actions for implementation of the fourth social responsibility field are however connected with investing of many resources not only in activities for implementation of the social responsibility policy in the respective field, but also in development of knowledge and skills in the organization itself needed for the policy’s implementation.

The investments in the community in which the socially responsible business carries out operations demand knowledge about the social change and in what way it has to be implemented (evaluation of the needs, definition of the idea, setting the goals, access to the beneficiaries etc.) so that it has to reach a maximum result, how all the aspects of the social development to be taken into consideration etc. Business organizations obviously can work on their own in the four fields of the social responsibility, including the field of responsibility to the society. Of course there is another way of working in the field. It is connected with partnership with experts in the field – the non-governmental organizations. That approach of work has a lot of advantages – it’s more effective and of a better quality, it is strategically elaborated, it demands less resources, leads to better results, has a wider range, contribute to the citizens’ participation and respectively to development of the society as a whole etc. More and more business organizations that have faced the difficulty to implement on their own socially responsible programs in certain communities adress for partnership their “natural” partners – the non-governmental organizations. Examples can be given with many companies abroad (British Airways, Vodafone, Ford etc.) During the last years examples from Bulgaria could be given as well: the partnership between First Investment Bank and Workshop for Civic Initiatives Foundation, Globul and “Generous heart” foundation, Overgas and “Young Bulgaria” foundation, “Kamburov and partners” and the “St. Stephen” foundation.
