Workshop for Civic Initiatives Foundation (WCIF) together with Bulgarian Donors’ Forum (BDF) organised a press conference dedicated to donations in Bulgaria on April 6, 2007 in BTA.
The press conference was organised at the invitation of BTA - a partner of the event.
In the press conference took part Iliyana Nikolova, executive director of WCIF, Vesela Gercheva, executive director of BDF, Emilia Shusharova, secretary of the community center “L. Karavelov” in Kurtovo Konare village and Evgeni Ivanov, chairman of board of directors of the association for youth culture and contemporary arts “Radar”.
The main thesis of Iliyana Nikolova was that we should not be good and make donations only on Christmas and New Year. In Bulgaria there are already many ways for making a donation – through a bank account, through Internet, with SMS or through a payroll giving, Nikolova said. There are more and more reliable organisations that are experts in the field of donations whom the citizens can trust and can be sure that their donations will be used effectively and for the cause that they were raised for. One of the possible ways for making a donation during the whole year, which is also a quite fast and easy way, is through Internet. Nearly a year ago WCIF created the first Bulgarian online donations web site Zaedno.bg which gives an opportunity to the donors to choose the cause which they would like to support and which provides a full information for the usage of the donated funds.
In 2006 donations at a total value of 23 mln leva were made and foods and clothes at a total value of nearly 4.0 mln leva were donated, Vesela Gercheva said. That is with 9.0 mln leva more, compared to 2005. Nearly half of the donations in the previous year were made on Christmas and Easter, added Gercheva. A tendency which people who work in the field of the donations in Bulgaria hope that will be soon overcome and that gradually a new culture for making donations during the whole year will appear.
